Drought Country  by Mary  (July 2013)

The crunch, crunch, crunch under my feet are the sounds of drought as I walk through our lower pasture.  Although the drought isn't as widespread as last year, it is still here in this area, and a sad time for the farmers around us as they watch their crops and animals suffer and die in the heat.  On the way to town, we saw a farmer already cutting his corn, leaving a few rows for the insurance adjustor.

This week, the weather has been pleasant, and it nearly always cools off at night.  We retire early, and get started on our outdoor work in the early morning.  It is such a pleasure to be outside in the cool, quiet of the dawn; something we don't bother to experience in the city.

We are so thankful for our water source.

*A fading midwest scene:  Larry climbed a dusty bank to take the above picture for me.
