A New Implement

by Larry  (May 2013)

We are reclaiming the lower pasture.  In doing so, we have tilled and reseeded small areas with a mixture of grasses.  After tilling several times to remove the noxious weeds, we then seeded it by hand, and covered it with a homemade drag, which was a long 2X4 filled with screws, pulled by hand.  Previously, we learned the seed needed to be embedded in the soil so it wouldn't dry out.  How do we do that?  I searched on line for an answer, and found packers at Tractor Supply.  We chose the smaller of the two available sizes for its mobility.  It is a 3' wide by 18" roller/packer.   Lo and behold, it fit in our blue pickup - Honda Accord - to transport to the farm.   After filling with water, it weighs 415 pounds.  We attached the tongue to the back of the tiller and pulled it with the tractor.  It works perfectly.
