Potato Bugs  by Mary  (July 2013)

We always thought a potato was a potato until we ate our homegrown potatoes.  Especially the Yukon Gold variety. What a difference!  Thankfully, they are easy to grow organically.  You just need to do bug patrol several days in a row, and it isn't difficult.  Rather fun, actually!

Potato plants are quite beautiful!

Potato bugs have a hard shell similar to beetles and are quite cute, don't you think!  Look at that little face!  The trick is to put a cottage cheese or large yogurt container under them, and then just brush them off into the soapy water.  I wore gloves at first, but now I've advanced to just bare fingers.  I'll never squash them between my fingers as Todd does!  Sick!  They are easy to spot and the first few days, I got over a hundred each day.  They are often mating and so they add up quickly.  They lay their eggs on the leaves and a beneficial lady bug might come along and eat the eggs, but  I'll have to say, I've never seen very many lady bugs compared to the potato bugs.  Something wrong there.

Larry is already digging potatoes for meals.  The skins are so thin and tender, all I need to do is scrub and cook them.  I always boil enough to have some left to make fried potatoes to go along with bacon and eggs for my hungry farmer man's breakfast.
